Annual Gathering August 19-23, 2009
Phoenicia, NY

Come and celebrate, practice together, and share some time in a peaceful and magical environment.

 

As we had so much fun last time, we all agreed to extend the event to 4 days. There will be a sweat lodge, new moon ceremony, bonfire ,labyrinth, star meditation, sound/voice/movement experience, plus lots of chi kung, meditation in the sanctuary, lecture on death and transcendence , slide show on the stages of alchemical transformation and just time to be together and share.

Location: Menla Mountain Retreat and Conference Center (operated by the non-profit Tibet House); Phoenicia, NY, in the Catskill Mountains with river, pond, and pool.

When: August: 19-23, 2009. Arrive Wednesday afternoon and leave Sunday after lunch.

* This is a suggested minimum donation for The Healing Tao Society so we can continue with the work of scholarships, grants, etc. All the organization to put this together is done by volunteer work.

Below you will find a schedule, but know that our purpose for gathering is to practice together, so this schedule is a guide and not mandatory. We will form groups with similar interests to do the morning chi kung; we will set up a group intention/formula during the silent meditation, etc. It’s up to us how we use the time.

New York’s Catskills

Area Information

Menla Mountain Retreat & Conference Center is 1500 feet above sea level and set on a 320-acre private nature reserve. It is located in a region of the Catskills renowned for its unspoiled beauty, variety of wildlife, abundance of rushing streams and rivers, and mountains. Aside from its natural splendor, the area offers such activities as canoeing, biking, horseback riding, and cross country skiing. Menla is located near the famous town of Woodstock, New York, noted for its art galleries, music, and shopping.

Sanctuary

784 square feet (approx. 28' x 28')
The Sanctuary is a seven sided wooden structure with floor to ceiling windows featuring mountain views. It was built specifically for contemplative workshops and meditation.

Private Houses

Snowlion

Two-story house with cathedral ceiling, 360 square foot living and dining room, kitchen, 200 square foot meeting room, and sundeck. Four bedrooms. One bath with jacuzzi and one bath with shower. Sleeps 1–10 in twin beds.

Eva’s House

Two bedroom house with kitchen, dining area, sleeping alcove, and full bath. Sleeps 1–4 in full and twin beds.

Orchard

Cottage set in a peaceful field.
Four single rooms with queen beds and private bath.

Panther

Faces the woods and a rushing stream.
Two single rooms with queen-sized beds and shared bath.

Dining

Our gourmet chef specializes in a wide variety of organic, protein-balanced vegetarian and international cuisine served in two dining rooms and an outdoor dining deck with breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

Bookstore & Café

Located in the Nalanda Conference Center, our Bookstore is a terrific place to find books by our faculty, as well as other gifts, jewelry and specialty items. The Café offers a variety of snacks, treats, and beverages, and is a wonderful place to relax and socialize. Free wi-fi is available at the Café.

Wellness Services

  • Three hours by bus from New York City on Adirondack Trailways to Phoenicia, N.Y.

By car from New York City:

Cross George Washington Bridge (upper level); take an immediate right onto the Palisades Parkway; continue to exit 9 West (NYS Thruway Albany 87). Drive for about 1 hour to exit 19 (Kingston exit); after toll booth take first right at traffic circle onto Route 28 West toward Pine Hill. Continue about 22 miles to Phoenicia. Continue approximately 1/2 mile beyond the Phoenicia sign and make a left onto Woodland Valley Road. At the T, make a right, continuing on Woodland Valley Road for about 1/2 mile. Immediately after the “Dangerous Intersection” sign, make a right onto Pantherkill Road.Continue to end of road and enter gates of Menla Mountain Retreat. Go through the gates into Menla, bearing slightly right uphill to the main parking area. Go into the building in front of you (Delos Inn, yellow with a blue staircase), and check in at the front desk.

By car from NYS Thruway South:

Take exit 19 (follow directions above).

Shuttle service to/from the Trailways bus in the town of Phoenicia on arrival and departure days is $5 per person payable to the driver. Shuttle service on non-arrival/departure days is $25 per shuttle.

By Bus:

Call Adirondack Trailways, 800-858-8555 or visit http://www.trailwaysny.com/html/english/fares_pdf/phoennyc.pdf, for information and departure times to and from Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City to Phoenicia, NY. The trip takes about 3 hours. With advance notice, Menla provides a shuttle to and from Phoenicia up until 8 p.m. Please call 845-688-6897 to arrange for pick-up.

By Train:

The Amtrak Rhinecliff train station is approximately 50 minutes from Menla. Call Amtrak, 800-872-7245, for information and train schedules to Rhinecliff, N.Y. Train ride is less than two hours from New York City. Taxi service is generally available at the Rhinecliff station.

By Air:

The closest airports are Stewart Airport in Newburgh, NY and Albany International Airport in Albany, NY You may also fly into any of the major New York City airports and take a train or bus from New York City. All New York City airports connect to Port Authority Bus Terminal (for the Trailways bus) or Penn Station (for Amtrak).
